Iolite is a transparent mineral and is encountered in all shades of blue or violet blue. It has a hardness of 7.5 and crystallizes in the orthorombic crystallographic system. It is named after the ancient Greek word “ion” meaning violet. Iolite is mined in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Australia, Namibia, Tanzania and Madagascar.
