Hematite is a mineral, consisting mostly of iron oxides. Its name is of Greek origin, and is due to the colour of the powder found when it is worked, which is as red as blood. Hematite is an opaque mineral with a strong metallic lustre, and a lead, silver or black colour. Its hardness is 6.5 and its specific gravity is 5.05. It has been used in jewellery making since 3000 BC.
