Etymologically, the word sapphire is derived from the ancient Greek word “sapphiros” and is encountered in ancient Greek texts and the Bible. It is originally derived from the ancient Hebrew word “sappir”, which means “the stone that can scratch everything”. Given that at that time diamonds were not known, sapphire was the stone that could scratch all other materials. In other words, the word “sappir” has the same meaning as the word “diamond” and both words are related to the hardest minerals on the planet.
