Carnelian (also known as Sard) is a variety of chalcedony (quartz) with a yellow-orange to reddish hue. This gemstone obtains its color from the impurities of oxide and iron hydroxide. The word derives from the Latin caro, meaning “flesh”, due to its distinctive colour. Deposits can be found today in India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Uruguay.
