Lapis Lazuli

is an impressive blue opaque gemstone, composed of the following minerals: Lazurite, Calcite and Pyrite. The latter often appears as golden sparkling specks on the surface of the stone and is one of the elements that adds to the beauty and uniqueness of this precious gemstone. It has a hardness of 5.5 and a specific gravity of 2.6. Etymologically, Lapis means “stone” in Latin. The second word comes from the Persian word Lazuar, which again means “stone” in Persian. After all, lazouli became the root of the European words azure, azzuro, azul, which mean sky blue. In other words, lapis lazuli means the “sky blue stone”. For the last 8000 years, the best quality Lapis in the world has been extracted from the mines of Afghanistan. It can also be found in North Chile, while a cheaper quality called denim lapis due to its lighter hue is located in the Andes. In all museums of the world and of course in Greek ones there is a large number of lapis lazuli exhibits dating back to the prehistoric times and beyond. It is considered to be the stone of wisdom and emotions. It relieves pain and promotes expressiveness.
