Hematite is an opaque mineral composed of iron oxides. Its name has Greek origins, derived from the red, blood-like powder that appears during processing. It features a metallic luster and varies in color from lead-gray and silver to black. With a hardness of 6.5 and a specific gravity of 5.05, hematite has been used in jewelry-making since as early as 3000 B.C.
