Tanzanite is known for its extremely strong trichromaticity, appearing alternately in shades of blue, violet and burgundy, depending on the orientation of the crystal. It is a variety of the mineral zoisite that belongs to the dessert group. It was discovered in 1967, in the Merelani Hills (Mererani) of the Manyara Region in Northern Tanzania, near the city of Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzanite is used as a precious stone and the naturally formed tanzanite is extremely rare and is still be mined only in the Merelani Hills.
