Nephrite (jade) Nephrite is a variety of actinolite, it has a hardness of 6, a specific gravity of 2.95 and crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. It is used to make carvings, sculptures and ornamental objects. Its name is derived from Greek and its Latin name “lapis nephriticus” means “stone for the kidneys”.
