Hematite is a mineral composed of iron oxides. Its name comes from the Greek word for blood, due to the red-coloured powder it produces when processed. Hematite is an opaque mineral with a metallic lustre and a colour that ranges from silvery-grey to black. It has a hardness of 6.5 and a specific gravity of 5.05. Hematite has been used in jewellery making since as early as 3000 BC.
