Beryl consists of several precious gemstones, widely known and highly valued in fine jewelry making. The main varieties of beryl are:
Emerald – the green variety of beryl, colored by traces of chromium or vanadium oxides. It is the most famous green gemstone and one of the most valuable in the world.
Aquamarine – the blue variety of beryl, prized for jewelry and colored by the presence of iron ions.
Morganite – distinguished by its pink to violet hue, resulting from traces of manganese oxides.
Heliodor – a yellowish-green variety of beryl.
Bixbite (Red Beryl) – an extremely rare and vivid red variety colored by manganese.
Goshenite – the colorless and transparent form of beryl, free from impurities.
The name “beryl” was already used by the ancient Greeks and is believed to derive from the older Sanskrit word verulliyam. In ancient texts and in the Bible, three varieties of beryl are mentioned: emerald, aquamarine, and heliodor.
